The Brief

Our brief was to design a kitchen diner with plenty of built in storage, a dining table and a sofa area to make full use of the garden views in a long rectangular space. Mid century detailing was required with an overall bright, light and modern feel.

About The Project

This Victorian property featured a typical long, narrow kitchen at the rear, previously extended but still feeling dark and constrained due to awkward recesses and angles. Recognising its potential, I undertook a thoughtful redesign to enhance both functionality and aesthetics.

Rebecca Coulby

About The Project

To maximise storage, I constructed a stud wall along the left side, initially appearing to narrow the space but ultimately allowing for a concealed utility cupboard housing the washing machine and tumble dryer. This wall also accommodated floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinetry and appliances, along with open shelving, effectively eliminating shadow gaps and awkward angles, resulting in a clean-lined space that feels more proportioned and spacious.

On the opposite side, I designed suspended boxing to conceal mood lighting running the room's length, aligning with the lower ceiling of the extended dining area. A bespoke canopy was created to house the extractor hood. A breakfast bar at the kitchen's end provides additional workspace and delineates the cooking area from the social dining space. New solid hardwood French doors, sympathetic to the property's Victorian character, were installed to fully open and connect the interior with the garden during summer months.

The color palette was kept light and bright, featuring white kitchen doors with brass hardware, Carrara white marble-effect quartz worktops, and herringbone-style oak-effect flooring. Solid oak shelves and a mantel introduce warmth and texture, while mid-century style soft furnishings and artwork add vibrant splashes of color. Black and brass Tom Dixon pendant lights create striking geometric silhouettes against the light background, tying the design together.

What Our Client Says

'We contacted Rebecca about a full-house renovation and how best to break the work down into more manageable chunks. Our initial consultations were fantastic, creative and in-depth, with Rebecca reviewing the whole house, our preferences, priorities, tastes and needs.

She produced amazing designs for our first chunk of work, to the living room and kitchen, covering almost the whole ground floor. Her ideas transformed both the rooms, making an awkward living/dining room feel like one lovely big living room, and making the kitchen/diner contain all the practical storage and space we needed.

The designs completely fit our modern/modernist/minimalist/nordic style and we were extremely excited to get the work done. The quality of the work itself was outstanding. I feel like I don't trust anyone else to touch the house now! Everything is high quality, solidly built and beautifully done. As we both work from home, we're here all the time and it makes a huge difference to our quality of life. We can't wait to get the next round of work done and massive thanks to Rebecca, Lloyd and the team. We won't be using anyone other than Coulby Interiors to do future work. THANK YOU!'
