The Brief

Our clients’ existing kitchen wasn’t working for them. A complete re-design was required for an awkward shaped, small room. Functionality was key due to our client’s disability.

About The Project

This was an interesting design to work on due to the unusual shape and size of the room, and my client’s individual accessibility requirements. The room is small with a low and steep vaulted ceiling. The existing kitchen was very dark and cramped, and too difficult for my client with a disability to fully enjoy. Every millimetre counted with this design and I had to really think carefully about what each cabinet would be used for and how easily all the storage and utensils could be accessed.

About The Project

I spent a good deal of time learning how my client wanted to be able to use the room, right down to his kipper breakfast each morning! For the colour palette, I kept things bright, light and modern. The beautiful modern matt green/grey Fijord colour kitchen doors added some colour, and the integrated handles avoided any potential bumps or snagging on door handles when moving around the small space.

I chose beautiful solid, full staved oak worktops to add warm tones and texture. My client was keen not to have any cold or hard surfaces, so properly treated and protected oak was the perfect solution. The lower level bespoke oak shelves meant that crockery was within arm’s reach and the eye-level oven, fridge and microwave also made cooking easier for my client. I replaced their existing table with a solid oak breakfast bar. This was longer and narrower in design than the table, so helped to increased the negative space and walkways. The higher breakfast bar also made it easier for my client to sit down. My team did a fantastic job making sure our clients were comfortable throughout the build and installation process and had to be extra careful working around a beautiful grand piano, which had to be kept dust free the entire time. We all certainly enjoyed the wonderful music we were treated to!

Whilst the emphasis was always on functionality and I was really pleased to hear my clients are now able to fully utilise and enjoy their new kitchen, I was also delighted that we were able to create such a beautiful overall look and finish as well.
