The Brief

Design a bedroom that maximises wardrobe and storage space. The room needs to feel a comfortable space with a super king-sized bed and needs to feel luxurious and unique.

About The Project

This is a traditional Victorian property and forms part of a total house renovation project that has taken place over a couple of years. At this point we had already completed our clients new kitchen and living space downstairs and I was keen to ensure the bedroom had a similar feel to the rest of the house and was equally as beautiful.

Rebecca Coulby

About The Project

The bedroom was already a good size, and this allowed me to design fully built-in and bespoke wardrobes, with each internal space designed to my clients exact requirements. I knew there was a chimney breast behind one wall and really wanted to expose this and highlight the Victorian red brick to create a central design feature. Upon removal of the stud wall, we discovered that this was not going to be possible as the brick was not in a good enough condition and the brick did not stretch across the length of the wall as we had hoped. I therefore effectively created this look using beautiful brick slips and light lime mortar.

I designed a low stud wall with solid oak shelf for the bed and bedside tables to stand against and then had glass shelves made to measure either side of this chimney breast for decorative items and plants. Across the entire front I designed a bespoke pelmet that could conceal led mood lighting to gently light up the brick work, right down through the glass shelves in the evening.

I added some architectural period features to the room such as decorative coving, high skirting, and a ceiling rose to emphasize the period property and work well with the tall Victorian windows. Soft, green-based heritage wall colour and wardrobe doors compliment the dark blue velvet curtains and bed.

A mid-century dressing table and mirror and lighting tie in well with the other rooms in the house. Overall this bedroom has an understated, elegant quality to it whilst at the same time providing far better storage solutions and a more comfortable and inviting place to sleep.

What Our Client Say

'We contacted Rebecca about a full-house renovation and how best to break the work down into more manageable chunks. Our initial consultations were fantastic, creative and in-depth, with Rebecca reviewing the whole house, our preferences, priorities, tastes and needs.

She produced amazing designs for our first chunk of work, to the living room and kitchen, covering almost the whole ground floor. Her ideas transformed both the rooms, making an awkward living/dining room feel like one lovely big living room, and making the kitchen/diner contain all the practical storage and space we needed. The designs completely fit our modern/modernist/minimalist/nordic style and we were extremely excited to get the work done.

The quality of the work itself was outstanding. I feel like I don't trust anyone else to touch the house now! Everything is high quality, solidly built and beautifully done. As we both work from home, we're here all the time and it makes a huge difference to our quality of life. We can't wait to get the next round of work done and massive thanks to Rebecca, Lloyd and the team. We won't be using anyone other than Coulby Interiors to do future work. THANK YOU!'
