The Brief
About The Project
This private art gallery was a real pleasure to design and see my team bring to life. My clients had already selected a dark indigo colour for the walls as a background to their existing painting collection, so this room was always going to be dramatic, with or without the paintings. Whilst the primary function of this room was to be an art gallery, it also needed to have some flexibility so that it could be used for other purposes such as formal social occasions, parties, or even smaller family occasions.
About The Project
I therefore wanted to create a central feature that wouldn’t detract from the paintings, but could be used for more intimate gatherings. So, we created a bespoke fireplace for a Planika Fireline bioethanol fire, with a black granite surround. Chairs and sofas can now be brought into the room whenever required and placed around the fire.
I chose a light golden solid oak flooring laid in the herringbone style to provide a wonderful contrast to the rich indigo tones on the walls. Our carpenters made all the wall panelling also painted in the indigo colour to frame the paintings.
I had to be careful with the lighting design for this space. I installed functional lighting for the paintings within a special pelmet that runs around the circumference of the room. The oversized crystal chandeliers are the feature lighting of the room and whilst they are really beautiful, they are hung in such a way that they do not detract from the paintings. All the lighting has dimmers to create different moods for the different occasions. I was really delighted with how the finished room looks. It was so close to the actual design – well done to my team!
It is a wonderful space to be in and I’m sure my clients will enjoying sharing it with all the artists chosen to exhibit their work.
