About The Project
The Brief
The client’s dark and impractical kitchen in a beautiful converted barn did not make the most of the potential space.
Our design brief was to create a highly bespoke kitchen-diner by removing an internal wall between the existing kitchen and utility room and create an open-plan, classic kitchen diner in keeping with the rest of this wonderful house.
'From the outset I knew that my design would require some highly specialised carpentry in order to achieve the stunning detailed finish I was aiming for.
'In particular the oak peninsular framed in oak with shelves and lit cupboards needed to be made in-situ as well as the worktop being made to fit around curved window recesses.
'The result was a wonderful bespoke peninsular with shelving and cupboards on one side, and ample drawer space on the other, framed in full stave oak.
'I chose a colour palette of natural textures and colours from brick and oak, together with neutral grey kitchens doors and accents of classic black and white.
'The removal of the internal wall between kitchen and utility provided some design opportunities to utilise the space a defunct kitchen cupboard offered in a creative way.
'Using this space, I was able to recess a fridge/freezer facing into the main kitchen, as well as install built in sliding larder units.
'The added benefit of having all this built in storage was not needing to have wall units either side of the range cooker, meaning I could use these spaces for more bespoke and creative design ideas.
'In this case I installed brick slips on the rear wall with bespoke shelving lit by LED lights.
'In order to make full use of the wonderful views of the garden and maximise the light, I removed the existing rear door and opened up the recess to install French doors with full pane glass.
'This transformed the amount of light flooding into the room and provided stunning views from the entire kitchen.
'The tones of the grey cupboard doors, brick wall and oak peninsular and worktop work beautifully together. The overall effect is a wonderful bespoke space that is practical and efficient.'

'I had a feeling I'd struck gold when I discovered Coulby Interiors. I wanted to completely renovate my kitchen/dining area to create more space by reconfiguring and incorporating the utility room.
'I did not want to build an extension. I knew it would involve careful design and some building work. I also wanted a lot more natural light and a rustic/modern look.
'I was looking for a hassle-free experience from someone who would offer a complete service from start to finish.
'Coulby Interiors achieved all this with flying colours!
'The successful outcome was the result of careful listening, good communication, creative design, superb attention to detail and great workmanship from all Rebecca's team.'
